Evacuation Skill Competency On-Site Training

A partial or complete healthcare facility evacuation is a high-risk procedure commonly performed in a background of chaos. It must be performed in an efficient and highly coordinated manner in order to move the greatest number of people in the least amount of time. The timing of evacuee movement on a particular floor is determined by incident leadership and is dependent upon a series of tasks that must be carried out on each affected unit in a standardized and methodical manner. Readiness requires ongoing staff training by department managers and should be initiated after the evacuation planning process has been completed.

The DQE Evacuation Skill Competency Training focuses on the key knowledge and skill sets that managers must fully understand and convey to their staff to carry out an evacuation. These core competencies include:

  • Evacuation types (emergent vs. non-emergent)
  • Incident management
  • Role of floor/unit/department
  • Evacuee assessment and preparation
  • Movement teams
  • Evacuee tracking
  • Evacuee holding and loading areas

OVERVIEW

Evacuation Skill Competency Training combines lecture, hands-on skill training, and facilitated discussion to help department managers (clinical and non-clinical) prepare for the task of training their staff on the key actions and responsibilities necessary to carry out an evacuation. This course requires completion of DQE’s evacuation planning process. Time will be allotted for the facility to demonstrate evacuation equipment, if available.
